Caring Tips

 

Caring for your avocado can be one of the most controversial topics within any relationship or family. Everyone wants that perfect avocado.

We've put together some tips to help settle the tension:

  • If it is a hot day, avoid chilling your avocados too quickly. Instead move your avocados into a cool shaded place and allow them to cool overnight.
  • Refrigerating your avocados will prolong the ripening process and maintain freshness. Put your fruit in the fridge if you want to stall the ripening process.
  • To help with the ripening of your avocado, put them in the fruit bowl. Apples, kiwifruit and avocados all produce natural ethylene gas. (Ethylene is a plant hormone that triggers the ripening process and is used commercially to help ripen bananas, avocados and other fruit.)
  • Please do not microwave your avocados or put your avocados in the oven to ripen them faster.
  • When feeling for avocados ripeness, avoid “DIGITISING”. Digitising occurs when people pick up an avocado and squeeze it with their fingers to gauge the ripeness of the fruit. This creates soft spots in the fruit and room for rots to start. Rather, cradle your avocado like a friendly giant within the palm of your hand and gently squeeze.
  • When close to full ripeness, refrigerate your avocado until you find the perfect time to eat it; either breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner or dessert.
  • TIP – Keep some avocados in the fridge and some in the fruit bowl. This way you will have avocados at different ripening stages to be enjoyed throughout the week. Alternatively, you could treat them all the same so you can have lots of avocados all at once!!! Then just order more!
